"Hello, I respond to short-term price fluctations with 4+ year sunk investments"
Who can remember all the way back to last summer, when we had daylight saving time, baseball, and $3 a gallon gasoline prices?

Not American car buyers, apparently, and you can see the evidence in the results of October auto sales.

Sales of big pickup trucks and SUVs went through the roof - doubling from the year before in some cases. Sales of small, fuel efficient cars, meanwhile, remained stagnant. It is as if all that moaning and groaning about price gouging by oil companies never happened.

Actually, it is worse than that. American consumers have reinforced all the stereotypes they are labeled with: short attention spans, lack of social consciousness and thinking with their wallets.

Ya know, it's kind of funny you mention this. I have a related point that goes along with this.

Part of my job every night is to watch the Gallup Poll Daily Briefing iTunes show to be sure that everything plays ok before the public sees it the next day. Well, the one I just watched for tomorrow talks about a poll where they ask an open ended question about what the government's priority should be.

Of course, Iraq & the war are number one by a long shot with about 64%, but more interesting is what is NOT on the list. Yep, you guessed it, gas prices. Not even on the list. Not more than a few months ago it was up there right behind the war. Another interesting fact was that illegal immigration was only 6%. Again, another thing that people got worked up about that just kind of went away. We are so fickle! No wonder nothing ever gets fixed. The politicians figure they'll just let it ride and we'll all forget about it in 6 months anyway!
