New '06 M.U.S.S. from Bianchi - singlespeed, disc brakes, cro-moly frame, retro paneled paint, oh god I love it.

So please pardon my ignorance, but what is a bike like this used for? It seems that the single speed would make it hard to get up mountains or hills, yet the disc brakes are ideal for powerful braking going down big hills... What is the combination useful for?

It's pretty good for looking awesome and stuff. And rocking.

Also, singlespeed mountain biking is hardcore - in some WORS age groups, there are just as many singlespeeders as geared riders.

Holy cow. Single speed riding up a mountain. That is damn hard core. I guess there is a freewheel for going down the mountain. Please tell me there is a freewheel. Although I would love to see someone's legs spinning around at 500 rpm because their feet are stuck to the pedals and they're going 45 mph. hmmm, come to think of it, I saw footage of a mountain unicyclist once and he looked a bit odd going down the mountain sans freewheel.
